The grounds of Darlington's protest were that their players, and the referee, had been intimidated by the Sunderland crowd. This was Sunderland's first ever game at the Newcastle Road ground that later became a permanent home; at this time, however, it was known as the "Old Cricket Ground" and had been let by the Durham FA for the day only.
